Siggraph 2005 sketch Optimized Photon Tracing Using Spherical Harmonic Light Maps (pdf) The sketch is a product of the research we've been doing on next generation game lighting. The focus of the research (and the sketch) is on practical techniques for putting rapid iteration global illumination in the hands of our artists.
2007 Microsoft XNA Gamefest Natural Outdoor Lighting in Games (zip)The talk explains to both artists and programmers several advanced lighting techniques including: preprocessed bounced light, hemisphere sky lights, GPU acceleration of lighting preprocesses, spherical harmonic prelighting for particle systems, and storage and streaming of lighting data in real time.
